Résumé
This is the story of six years which I spent alone, in two spells on an uninhabited coral atoll half a mile long and three hundred yards wide in the South Pacific. It was two hundred miles from the nearest inhabited island, and I first arrived there on October 7, 1952 and remained alone (with only two yachts calling) until June 24, 1954, when I was taken off ill after a dramatic rescue. I was unable to return to the atoll until April 23, 1960 and this time I remained alone until December 27, 1963
I was fifty when I went to live alone on Suvarov, after thirty years of roaming the Pacific, and in this story I will try to describe my feelings, try to put into words what was, for me, the most remarkable and worthwhile experience of my whole life. I chose to live in the Pacific Islands because life there moves at the sort of pace which you feel God must have had in mind originally when He made the sun to keep us warm and provided the fruits of the earth for the taking.

Souvarof... un îlot de huit cents mètres de long sur trois cents mètres de large, jeté dans le Pacifique-Sud, à l'écart de toute terre habitée. C'est sur ce caillou de corail que Tom Neale jette son dévolu. Marin sur les lignes de commerce qui sillonnent le Pacifique et l'océan Indien, puis employé en Nouvelle-Zélande, en Polynésie et aux Hébrides, ce bourlingueur a plus de cinquante ans quand il réalise son vieux rêve : s'établir sur une île déserte. Il se fait déposer à Souvarof par un bateau ami et entame une vie solitaire qui va durer près de vingt ans, ponctuée de très rares visites, parmi lesquelles celle de Bernard Moitessier. Robinson des mers du Sud raconte l'extraordinaire aventure d'un homme qui a voulu vivre son paradis sur terre et qui l'a construit, jusqu'à l'épuisement, de ses propres mains. Depuis la mort de Tom Neale en 1977, l'île est devenue une sorte de sanctuaire : les marins qui y font escale sont priés de contribuer à entretenir le jardin qu'il avait créé.
